Savannah and Mason’s wedding at Herons Crossing on Whidbey Island was an unforgettable day full of beautiful memories!

This sweet couple dated each other all the way back in high school, can you believe that?! After high school, their relationship side of things took a bit of a break, while they remained close friends. However, it wasn’t long before they renewed their partnership before taking the next step in their commitment to each other.

During a hiking trip to Ebey’s Landing on Whidbey Island Mason popped the question! They spent the day together, being fully present in each other’s company. It started out with a trip to their favorite coffee shop on the island, and a stop at a gallery to check out a local glass artist. It was such a beautiful day that Savannah and Mason decided to end it with a hike at Ebey’s Landing. When they reached the scenic view at the end of their hike, Mason knelt down and asked for Savannah’s hand in marriage! After saying yes, the couple hiked back down before spending the night celebrating at dinner.

Knowing that Whidbey Island holds such special meaning to Savannah & Mason, its no surprise they chose to plan their wedding at Herons Crossing. An intimate Airbnb-style beachfront wedding venue with beautiful scenes of the shore. For me, the day began when I met Savannah in her getting-ready suite. Savannah is so bubbly and has the sweetest personality. She works with children in her career as a school teacher and her getting-ready suite was filled with all of her little nieces and nephews who are beyond adorable! In fact, Savannah’s nephew was very curious about me following everyone around with my camera for the day and it almost became a game of peek-a-boo with him. Needless to say, he eventually warmed up to me!

Savannah’s wedding day style was classic, with a strapless bridal gown with a beautiful bow detail on the back. She paired that with heirloom jewelry that was handed down to her from her family, a beautiful but understandable pearl headband, and a pair of shoes that stole the show! She was the picture of elegance with her crisp wedding day look. Once dressed for the day, she was off to meet Mason for their first look and private vows.

Savannah and Mason’s first look is one that I will never forget as a wedding photographer. We planned for this private moment between them, but, purely by accident, Savannah’s grandmother “crashed” their first look. It was a beautifully emotional moment. One filled with happy tears and the best portrait of a grandmother overcome with joy at the sight of her granddaughter on her wedding day.

Knowing that the second half of their first look would involve private wedding vows, I tucked myself away, just a bit, to give Savannah and Mason some privacy. I know that this moment tends to be incredibly emotional for couples and I wanted to allow them to have the intimate experience they hoped for.

This is one couple, that was open to doing what worked best for them on their wedding day. From the Chipotle catering to the family friend playing cover music and their modern take on having a wedding party. Savannah and Mason didn’t exactly have a wedding party, however, they asked their closest friends to “dress the part” so we could get some amazing photos of them with the bride and groom. I thought this was such a unique way to involve friends in your wedding without the stress of putting together a more “traditional” wedding party.

But, there was one personal touch to their wedding day that truly stood out to me the most! A funny, semi-creepy, Chucky-inspired doll that their close friends and flower girls used to plant on the roof of the venue. This harmless prank was done out of love and a sense of fun, so I had to capture a picture of the doll!
