Some sessions walk in and introduce themselves. Karissa and Ron didn’t walk in — they arrived. These Court in the Square engagement photos started in the streets of Pioneer Square and ended somewhere that stopped me mid-edit. Two outfit changes, coordinated color stories, and enough energy to light up every brick-lined block of the neighborhood. This one was always going to be something special.

They Styled Themselves. Yes, Really.
Before we even get into the locations, we have to talk about the fashion — because it set the entire tone for the day.
For their first look, Karissa wore a dramatic white tulle dress with a ruffled hem that moved like it had its own personality. Ron matched her in a sharp black double-breasted suit. The contrast was stunning, and against the tree-lined canopy of Occidental Square, it photographed like something out of a bridal editorial.
Then they changed into matching red.
A fitted red blazer and trousers for him. A structural red top and metallic mini skirt for her. Head-to-toe coordination, completely self-styled, completely them. When we walked past the Cadillac Hotel sign in those fits, I already knew this gallery was going to stop people mid-scroll.
They dressed for the photos they wanted, and it showed.

Pioneer Square Did What Pioneer Square Does
Walk any block of Pioneer Square and you’ll find something worth stopping for. Historic brick buildings, cobblestone streets, old-growth tree canopy, murals tucked into alleyways — it’s one of Seattle’s most layered, textured neighborhoods.
We wandered through Occidental Square early in the session, which gave us that gorgeous cathedral-like tree coverage overhead. The dappled August light filtering through the leaves made the white tulle glow, and Ron spinning Karissa under the trees was one of those moments that happens fast and photographs perfectly.
Karissa and Ron are the kind of couple who don’t need a lot of direction. They have a best-friend ease with each other — silly, comfortable, genuinely happy — and that energy translated into every frame. When people ask me what makes an engagement session feel real, it’s this. Couples who actually like each other.

The Locus Wines Detour (The Best Kind of Unplanned)

Here’s where the session took a turn nobody expected.
We had stopped at Locus Wines (@locuswines) to use their outdoor seating area for a few portraits. The exposed brick exterior, the warm interior visible through the windows — it was a beautiful backdrop. A few minutes in, the owner noticed us, came outside, and in the most genuinely Seattle way possible, invited us in.
Not just in. He offered us wine and the use of their back room for photos — complimentary, no questions asked.
We said yes immediately.
The interior of Locus Wines is warm and moody in the best way. Exposed brick walls, a curated art collection, amber lighting, wine bottles stacked floor to ceiling. Karissa standing in that white tulle dress against those brick walls with Ron seated beside her in that black suit — it looked like a magazine spread. The kind of shot you don’t plan. The kind of shot you just have to be present enough to receive.
If you haven’t been to Locus Wines, it’s a boutique Washington winery and tasting room tucked right into Occidental Mall in Pioneer Square — small plates, incredible wine flights, and apparently the warmest hospitality in the city. We stayed longer than expected. Zero regrets.

A Familiar Face on Two Wheels

As we made our way deeper into the neighborhood, we ran into a friendly face on a bike making his rounds through Pioneer Square. He knew Karissa and Ron — turned out to be a good friend of theirs — and the reunion energy in that moment was so warm and spontaneous. It was one of those little gifts a session gives you when you let it breathe.
Pioneer Square has that effect. It’s a neighborhood that rewards wandering.
The Grand Finale: Court in the Square Engagement Photos

We ended the session at Court in the Square, and it was the perfect payoff.
If you’ve never been, Court in the Square is one of Seattle’s most architecturally interesting spaces. Tucked into the heart of Pioneer Square, it’s an atrium venue with exposed brick walls, a soaring glass ceiling, and an energy that somehow feels both historic and alive. The light at 5pm in August inside that space is something I think about often. For Court in the Square engagement photos specifically, that late afternoon glow through the glass ceiling is unmatched.
For the red outfit, it was the ideal setting. The warmth of the brick against their rich skin tones, the way the overhead light fell — this is the kind of space where my True Tone approach matters most. Beautifully lit, properly exposed, honoring the depth and warmth of their complexions rather than working against it.
Karissa and Ron were completely in their element by this point. Relaxed, playful, connected. The camera was almost beside the point — we were just documenting what was already happening between them.

A Little Spoiler
If you want to see how this love story continued, you don’t have to wait long. Karissa and Ron’s wedding at The Sanctuary at Lotte Hotel Seattle is already on the blog — and it is everything.
