This Gas Works Park LGBTQ surprise proposal was nearly a year in the making! When my clients reach out to me to capture a proposal it’s typically the week of the proposal. Sometimes, it’s even the same day that they are planning to propose. Not this couple! They reached out to me on January 1st for a surprise proposal in October! There was so much planning and intention behind this story, and I can’t wait to share it with you.

Before we get to the proposal story, let’s start with how they met! S & T met during the height of the pandemic. In a way that most couples do, on a dating app. At the time, T was living in New York, and S, who is originally from the DMV area, was living in the PNW.

After talking for a bit, they decided it was time to meet in person. A flight was scheduled to New York and they spent two amazing weeks together. After that time, they both knew that they were in love and that they had each found the one. They discussed what it might look like for them to continue their relationship long distance. But as it turns out, T was already interested in relocating, and she felt that her newfound relationship was the green light she was looking for to make the move. Every decision they made together about moving forward with their relationship was very intentional, and wholly rooted in love.

About a year later, S reached out to me. In our initial conversation that January, she relayed her intentions to propose. I was floored when she told me that she was planning the proposal 9 months in advance! However, with good reason. She was determined to keep it a total surprise, and she knew that planning things in advance was the best way to keep things under wraps. We talked several times throughout the planning process and as time went on, I watched the plans for the proposal grow and evolve into something bigger and more meaningful at every turn.

Our plan was for the three of us to meet at Gas Works Park for a couple’s photoshoot!

They came to the shoot dressed absolutely gorgeously. During the shoot, and prior to the proposal happening, I worked with them on their couples photos and all was going well. When I work with couples during a session, I like to get them laughing and engaged with each other by telling them to whisper things in each other’s ear. Well, T took this opportunity to whisper in S’s ear that “she hasn’t bought the cow because she’s getting the milk for free”. Little did she know, what was about to happen!

S came to the shoot with a very special birthday gift for T. It was a custom-printed t-shirt that said: “Will you marry me?” printed across the bottom. And, of course, a gorgeous engagement ring to go along with it. After having just made a joke about marriage, the shock was unreal! In fact, she was so shocked that she actually screamed before a flood of happy tears came over her.

If you’re not familiar with Gas Works Park, where the proposal took place, it’s a historic park in Seattle that is teeming with locals. In fact, during the proposal, there were a couple of kayakers passing by. They were cheering and celebrating and I have to admit, it was such an awesome moment! I have never witnessed a proposal filled with so much love & joy. I am beyond honored to have been part of capturing their story.

Remember how I mentioned that S approached this proposal with so much intention? She also planned a surprise engagement/early birthday celebration which was waiting for them at Aerlume restaurant in Seattle. Family and close friends flew in from the East Coast to be there with them to celebrate this special moment in their lives. The celebration was beautiful, and words cannot express the amount of joy & happiness that day was filled with!
